Corporate Profile Report vs. Certificate of Good Standing — Key Differences

Order a Certificate of Good Standing
Look up your company and order its Certificate of Good Standing

Enter your company name, Corporate Access Number, or Business Number to confirm the corporation is active and order its government-issued Certificate of Good Standing.

Two of the most commonly requested corporate documents in Canada are the Corporate Profile Report and the Certificate of Good Standing. They sound similar — both come from the provincial or federal corporate registry, both confirm facts about a corporation — but they serve different purposes and contain different information. Knowing which one you need can save time, money, and frustration.

The Quick Answer

  • Corporate Profile Report — a comprehensive snapshot of a corporation's public record, including directors, registered address, corporate history, and filing status. Use it when you need detailed, verifiable information about a specific company.
  • Certificate of Good Standing — a brief official certification that a corporation is actively registered and compliant with all filing requirements. Use it when you need to prove your own corporation is in good standing for a third party.

  • Accountants verifying a client's company for QuickBooks Online or payroll setup

What Is a Certificate of Good Standing?

A Certificate of Good Standing (also called a Certificate of Status, Certificate of Compliance, or Certificate of Existence depending on the province) is a compliance certificate — used when your own corporation needs to prove its good standing to a third party.

Unlike a profile report, it is not a detailed informational document. It is a short, official certificate that says, in effect: "This corporation is legally registered, has met all its filing obligations, and is in good standing as of today."

Who requests Certificates of Good Standing:

  • Corporations registering in a new province as an extra-provincial corporation
  • Business owners applying for bank financing or a line of credit
  • Corporations tendering for government contracts
  • Companies being acquired (sellers provide this during M&A due diligence)
  • Corporations licensing or franchising their business
  • Lawyers and notaries completing real estate closings involving corporate parties

Can One Document Substitute for the Other?

Generally, no. The documents serve different purposes and requesting parties will specify which one they need.

A bank requiring a Certificate of Good Standing for a mortgage application will not accept a Corporate Profile Report in its place — even though the profile report contains more information and also confirms the corporation's status.

Conversely, an accountant requesting a Corporate Profile Report to verify directors' information for QuickBooks does not need a Certificate of Good Standing, which would not provide the director details they need.

When in doubt, ask the requesting party specifically which document they require.

Province-Specific Naming Variations

The same documents go by different names in different provinces:

Province Profile Report Name Good Standing Name
Federal Corporate Profile Certificate of Compliance
Ontario Corporate Profile Report Certificate of Status
British Columbia Corporate Summary / Search Certificate of Good Standing

Québec Extrait d'immatriculation Attestation d'immatriculation
