CORES is Alberta's Corporate Registry System — the government platform where every Alberta incorporation, annual return, amendment, and corporate search is actually processed. Here's the part that surprises most business owners: you can't log into CORES yourself. Access is restricted to accredited registry agents, law firms, and high-volume subscribers, which is why Alberta corporations file through an authorized CORES agent instead.
This guide covers what CORES does, who's allowed to use it, what the accreditation levels mean, and how to get your filings done without an account.
What do you need done in CORES?
Most people who search for CORES aren't curious about the system — they have a filing to get done and have just discovered they can't log in to do it. Pick the one that brought you here. Each is filed through our CORES-certified agents, most within 1 business day, no account needed:

What does CORES actually do?
Every transaction on the Alberta Corporate Registry flows through CORES, including:
- Incorporating a new Alberta corporation
- Filing the mandatory annual return
- Changing directors, registered office addresses, or corporate names
- Corporate searches and profile reports
- Dissolutions, revivals, and amalgamations
- Registering out-of-province (extra-provincial) corporations
If your corporation exists in Alberta, its official record lives in CORES — and keeping that record current isn't optional. Corporations that stop filing are flagged as non-compliant and eventually dissolved.
Who can access CORES?
Access is limited to accredited users, not the general public. According to Service Alberta, direct access is available to:
- Authorized registry agents — private service providers accredited by the province. This is how most Albertans interact with the registry, whether they realize it or not.
- Law firms in public practice in Alberta, via the Registries Online subscriber program
- High-volume subscribers such as financial institutions — the program requires a minimum of 50 transactions per month and at least one accredited person on staff
Everyone else — including the owner of the corporation itself — files through one of these intermediaries.
What are CORES Levels 1, 2, and 3?
CORES users are accredited at three levels, each requiring a separate Service Alberta exam. Higher levels authorize progressively more complex registry work — Level 1 covers foundational transactions, while Level 3 accreditation covers the most complex corporate filings. Training programs run 10–18 hours per level, and the exams are administered by Service Alberta itself, not the training providers.
What this means for you as a business owner: when a filing service says it's a certified CORES registry agent, someone on that team has passed the province's accreditation exams for the transactions they file on your behalf. It's worth asking — not every "filing service" online holds Alberta accreditation.
Can I file through CORES myself?
No — and this catches a lot of first-time Alberta incorporators off guard, especially those coming from provinces where owners file directly through a government portal (Ontario's Business Registry, BC Registry Services, or Corporations Canada federally). Alberta deliberately delivers registry services through accredited private agents rather than a public-facing website.
Practically, you have two routes:
- Walk into a physical registry office — the same offices that handle licence plates. Done in person, during business hours, at fees each agent sets independently.
- Use an online CORES-certified agent — the same legal filing, handled remotely, usually faster.
How do I file my annual return without a CORES account?
Your Alberta annual return is due within one month of your incorporation anniversary — the shortest filing window in Canada. Through CRS, a certified CORES registry agent:
- Send us your corporation's legal name or Corporate Access Number
- Confirm your directors and registered office are current
- We file directly through CORES — within 1 business day, $159 all-in + GST, government fee included
No account, no portal, no in-person visit. The same applies to incorporations, amendments, and corporate searches.
Struck off for missed annual returns? Revival goes through CORES too
Miss your annual returns for long enough and Alberta dissolves the corporation — and from that moment its bank account, contracts and name all belong to an entity that no longer legally exists. It is recoverable. A revival is filed through CORES by an accredited agent, and the corporation is restored under its original Corporate Access Number as if it had never lapsed. Frequently asked questions
What does CORES stand for?
CORES is Alberta's Corporate Registry System — the electronic platform Service Alberta uses to process all corporate filings and searches in the province, from incorporations and annual returns to amendments and dissolutions.
Is CORES the same as the Alberta Corporate Registry?
Effectively, yes. The Corporate Registry is the official record of Alberta corporations; CORES is the system through which that record is searched and updated. Any filing made 'with the registry' is processed in CORES.
Can I get my own CORES account?
Not as an ordinary business owner. Direct CORES access is limited to accredited registry agents, Alberta law firms in public practice, and high-volume subscribers processing 50+ transactions per month with an accredited person on staff. Everyone else files through an authorized registry agent.
How much does a CORES filing cost?
Two amounts are involved: the government fee for the transaction, set by Service Alberta and revised from time to time (registry fees rose on 2 July 2026), and the registry agent's own service fee, which each agent sets independently. CRS charges $159 all-in + GST for an Alberta annual return — the government fee included, filed within 1 business day — so a change to the registry's schedule doesn't change what you pay.
Do other provinces use CORES?
No. CORES is Alberta-specific. Other jurisdictions run their own systems — Ontario uses the Ontario Business Registry, BC uses BC Registry Services, and federal corporations file through Corporations Canada's Online Filing Centre — and most of those allow direct public filing, unlike Alberta.
